Brett Andrew Swain was born June 21, 1986 in Asheville, North Carolina. Brett Swain moved to Carlsbad, California where he attended high school at Carlsbad Public High School. He then went to San Diego State University where he played NCAA football. Brett Swain played four seasons at San Diego State. As an upperclassman he saw quite a bit of game time and accumulated lots of playing time.
In 2006, Brett Swain started for the first time in his college career and recorded 47 receptions for 428 yards he also had 7 caries for 35 yards. During the 2007 season he also started for San Diego State and truly stepped up as a senior leader on the team, he led San Diego State with 58 receptions for 973 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was named an All-Mountain-West-Conference wide receiver for the 2007 season.
Brett Swain entered the 2008 NFL draft with promising hopes of being drafted. The Green Bay Packers selected him seventh-round draft pick. He was cut after the final roster cut-down but retained on a future contract and signed to the Green Bay Packers practice squad. Brett Swain spent all of the 2008 season on the practice squad where he showed the coaches he had what it took to be on the Green Bay Packers roster as an active member.
