CJ Wilson was born in Belhaven, North Carolina. He attended Northside High and was active in football, basketball, and track and lettered multiple times. On the football team, CJ Wilson was a versatile player. At various points in his career, he tried out positions of linebacker, cornerback, saftey, tackle, runningback, and fullback. By his senior year, CJ Wilson helped lead the time to the Eastern Championship.

CJ Wilson graduated in 2006 and enrolled at East Carolina. On the football team, he made a big impression on teammates and coaches from the start. After playing in all 13 games with 7 starts, CJ Wilson had tallied 29 tackles, six of which for loss, and four sacks. Various media outlets pegged him for the C-USA All-Freshman Team. By 2007, CJ Wilson was a sophomore who played in 13 games with 9 starts. By season's end, he was nomiated for second team All C-USA honors.

In 2008, CJ Wilson's junior year continued the momentum. CJ Wilson started all 14 games. By the end of that season, CJ Wilson was second in his school's conference in sacks: he made 10.5 that season. Again, CJ Wilson earned All-C-USA honors, this time as first team. CJ Wilson's senior year happened in 2009. CJ Wilson tallied 57 tackles and 5.5 sacks that year. As a result, CJ Wilson was honored as C-USA's Defensive Player of the Year, his second consecutive year winning that award.

CJ Wilson graduated in May 2009 with a B.A. in communications. CJ Wilson made history by being the first East Carolina player the Green Bay Packers ever drafted.
