Derrick Martin was raised in Colorado. At Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, Derrick Martin was a varsity athlete in three sports in addition to being an honors student.
On the football team, Derrick Martin was widely recognized for his talents. He received All-Colorado and All-State Class 5A honors for his work as a quarterback and runningback. Additionally, Derrick Martin racked up impressive stats including
competing 96-of-185 passes totaling 1,475 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also made 138 rushes tallying 830 yards and three touchdowns. This earned him the honor of MVP of the Denver league his senior year. Derrick Martin brought his high school football team to state quarterfinals and semifinals as well.
Derrick Martin played college ball for Wyoming. By the time he was done after three seasons, Derrick Martin had competed in 30 games with 24 starts as a cornerback.
