Justin Tyrell Harrell was born February 14th, 1984 in Martin, Tennessee. Justin Harrell found sports success as early as high school where he played both basketball and football. At Westview High School in Martin, Tennessee Justin Harrell was a three year starter on the basketball team where he averaged 17 points a game. As a senior he was named Tennessee’s 2A “Mr. Football” he was also named West Tennessee’s Defensive Player of the Year after recoding 72 tackles, 19 for loss and 4 sacks.
After high school Justin Harrell went to the University of Tennessee where he played football with the Volunteers. After sustaining an ankle injury at camp he sat out most of his redshirted freshman year and only saw playing time in 8 games before re-injuring his ankle and missing the rest of the season. As a returning sophomore he earned a starting position which he held for the first 11 games of the season before suffering another injury that benched him until post season play. He was named the Cotton Bowl Defensive MVP for the 2004 season. In his junior season, Justin Harrell he started 11 games pulling down 39 tackles. As a senior in the 2006 season Justin Harrell was named a defensive captain but was sidelined early after tearing a muscle and only saw playing time in 3 games. Some worried that the lack of exposure would hurt his draft chances.
Yet in the 2007 NFL draft Justin Harrell was selected in the first round as the 16th overall pick by the Green Bay Packers. Justin Harrell signed his Green Bay Packers contract on the night before the training camp and subsequently saw playing time in seven games, starting in two of them before suffering an ankle injury that sidelined him for 5 games. In 2008 Justin Harrell returned to the Green Bay Packers played in 6 games and recorded 13 tackles. He had missed the off season program, training camp and the first 7 games due to back surgery and then missed the final 3 games due to a hip problem that stemmed from the back injury. Over the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Harrell was continuously on the Injured Reserve list and is ready to get back into the game for the 2011 NFL season.
