Nick McDonald grew up in Sterling Heights, Michigan along with siblings Will, Chris, and Kathy. Nick McDonald attended Henry Ford High School in Sterling Heights, Michigan where he competed as tight end and defensive end for the football team. Nick McDonald received All-Macomb Area Conference honors during his junior and senior year and was also named all-area and all-county. Nick McDonald was a letter-winner in football, basketball, baseball, and track.
After high school, Nick McDonald headed to Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan. Nick McDonald redshirted his first season on the team but still earned honors for his hard work on the scout squad. Nick McDonald spent four years on the squad and lettered all four times. Nick McDonald competed in 44 career games with 29 starts.
One of Nick McDonald's biggest achievements was when he earned the title of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year. Nick McDonald graduated in 2010 and looked to enter the NFL.
Nick McDonald was picked up by the Green Bay Packers on April 30, 2010 as a non-drafted free agent.
